What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye disease is a progressive eye condition that can make day to day life uncomfortable. It often occurs when the eyes aren’t producing enough quality tears to keep them lubricated and comfortable. Without tears to keep the eye’s surface moisturized, they can become irritated and inflamed.

Sometimes, the eye produces enough tears, but it drains too quickly, leaving the eyes without the necessary tears to stay comfortable.

The Tear Film

The tear film is a layer of tears that cover the surface of the eye. It’s made up of 3 layers, a mucus layer, a watery layer, and an oily layer. The oily layer prevents the tear from evaporating, the watery layer repels bacteria, and the mucus layer keeps the tear fastened to the eye.

When one of the layers is out of balance, the tears can’t provide adequate moisture for the eye, and dry eye symptoms can develop.

Detecting & Treating Dry Eye Disease

At Perspective Eye Center, we want your eyes to feel refreshed and comfortable and for your vision to be clear. We use modern technologies to detect and treat dry eye disease.

LipiScan Meibomian Gland Imaging

Our LipiScan® Dynamic Meibomian Imager is an imaging technology that allows us to take high-definition photos of your meibomian glands. These glands line your eyelids and are responsible for the oily layer of your tears. When they’re not working correctly, your tear film—and the feeling of your eyes—can suffer.

With a quick, noninvasive scan during your appointment, we can identify signs of meibomian gland dysfunction. The condition of your glands informs us on the most appropriate treatment for your needs.

iProX: IPL Therapy for Dry Eye Relief

Our iProX intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment is designed to address the underlying causes of dry eye. By targeting inflammation, stimulating meibomian gland function, and eliminating bacteria and Demodex mites, iProX can provide long-term relief from dryness, irritation, and discomfort.

Unlike artificial tears or other short-term solutions, iProX works at the root of the problem, improving tear quality and overall eye health.

Our IPL treatment can be combined with LLLT for even more dramatic results. There are plenty of aesthetic benefits of IPL and LLLT treatment alongside relieving your dry eye symptoms, including:

  • Reducing hyperpigmentation from sun damage

  • Minimizing redness, inflammation, and rosacea

  • Boosting collagen production and skin elasticity

  • Diminishing wrinkles and shrinking the appearance of pores

InfinityPro: Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) for Dry Eye Treatment

The InfinityPro low-level light therapy (LLLT) system offers a soothing, noninvasive treatment for people with dry eye.

Using red and infrared light, InfinityPro gently warms the eyelids, helping to unclog meibomian glands and enhance natural oil production for healthier, more stable tears.

LLLT also helps reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and support skin rejuvenation—making it an excellent complement to IPL therapy.

Whether used alone or in combination with IPL, LLLT provides a comfortable and effective way to restore eye comfort, promote long-term relief, and boost the youthful appearance of your skin

LipiFlow: Dry Eye Therapy

The LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System is designed to remove blockages in your meibomian glands that are preventing them from producing the oil necessary for the protective oily layer of your tear film.

First, we’ll administer numbing eye drops to reduce any discomfort associated with the treatment. Then, single-use, sterile, dome-shaped devices are placed over the eyes. These devices apply heat to your eyelids. The combination of heat plus pressure massages and liquefies any blockages in the glands and helps meibum flow freely.

Although some patients report some mild discomfort associated with the treatment, most find it very tolerable

What Causes Dry Eye Disease?

Age

Dry eyes commonly occur as a part of the natural aging process. Most people over 65 experience symptoms of dry eye.

Gender

Dry eyes can occur due to hormonal changes, which is common in women during pregnancy, menopause, or during the use of oral contraceptives.

Medications

Certain medications, like antihistamines, decongestants, antidepressants, and blood pressure medications, can reduce tear production.

Medical Conditions

Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and thyroid problems may develop symptoms of dry eye. Also, eyelid or gland conditions like blepharitis or meibomian gland dysfunction can cause dry eyes

Environmental Conditions

Smoky, windy, or overly dry climates can cause tears to evaporate too quickly, contributing to dry eye symptoms

Digital Eye Strain

Spending too much time staring at digital screens without adequate breaks can cause less blinking, making the eyes feel dry.

Long-Term Contact Lens Wear

Wearing contact lenses long-term can lead to the development of dry eyes.

Refractive Surgeries

Laser eye surgery, like LASIK or PRK, can decrease tear production and contribute to dry eye symptoms.
